MVRDVMVRDV is a global
operating architecture and urbanism office with a progressive ideal engaged in
solving global issues. MVRDV was set up in Rotterdam in 1993 by Winy Maas
(Schijndel, 1959), Jacob van Rijs (Amsterdam, 1964) and Nathalie de Vries (Appingedam,
1965). In close collaboration, the 3 architects produce designs and studies in
the fields of architecture, urbanism and landscape design. MVRDV is well known
for the Netherlands pavilion at the 2000 Hannover World Expo, the VPRO
broadcasting centre in Hilversum and a portfolio of realizations all over the
world. How to cope with
the increasing density of cities is one of the central themes in the work of
MVRDV. MVRDV actively researches and debates global ecological issues such as
the consequences of urban sprawl, bio-industry and climate change. Large scale
studies and provocative proposals have lead in many cases to a constructive
discussion about issues, often considered terrifying or to be solved by
legislation rather than architecture. Selected works: HNB NOR (Oslo, 2011), Grand Paris (Paris,
2009), Mirador (Madrid, 2006), NL Paviljon Expo 2000 (Hanover, 2000). Books:
KM3: Excursions on capacity (MVRDV, 2005), MVRDV 1991-2002 (El Croquis, 2003),
Costa Iberica (MVRDV, 2000), Metacity/Datatown (MVRDV, 1998) Farmax
(MVRDV, 1998) Awards:
The work of MVRDV has received many international awards, as the most recent
are in 2011: the Gulden Phoenix, Red Dot Award, Mies van der Rohe Award for
Contemporary European Architecture, 2010: The Dutch Design Award, City of
Rotterdam Award. Teaching: Winy Maas started in 2007 as part-time professor at TU Delft. He is
also visiting professor since 2006 architectural design at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology. Maas was previously professor at the Berlage
Institute, Ohio State and Yale University. Nathalie de Vries was a guest
